Chapter 14
âWhat the hell, Mom?â Liz turned toward her, eyes wide, with her hands on her hips. âYou can cause earthquakes now?â
With everything else that had just happened, surrounded by dead bodies, and she was asking about earthquakes? I almost laughed, but I knew she did things like this in stressful situations. It was her way of working everything out in her head.
âElizabeth, we have more pressing issues than my magic.â Mom sighed, rubbing her forehead. âBoth Roger and Delphine got away, and there are so many injured witches and hybrids.â
âIâm sorry, Mamma.â Liz hugged her. âThis is all just so much.â She looked around at the carnage, at everything. âWhat are we going to do?â
Catherine and Allison were off to the side checking the witches and hybrids Delphine had been draining earlier. The hybrids were already coming around, but I couldnât be sure if the witches were going to make it.
Genevieve stepped forward and placed a hand on Lizâs shoulder. âDear, we will do what we must, but these peopleââshe gestured toward some of the deadââthey did not die in vain. They died trying to protect our city. We will bury our dead and regroup. Delphine will not win. Do you understand?â
Liz nodded and wrapped her arms around Genevieve, then pulled away with a horrified expression marring her beautiful face. âHow many? How many did we lose?â
âToo many, Iâm afraid, both witch and hybrid.â Genevieve shook her head. âIâve sent James to collect the bodies so we may lay them to rest and consecrate the ground. He is working alongside Jeffrey from your coven.â
My heart fell to my feet. Our coven, the New Orleans Coven. Working with the Hybrid Coven. This was what we had always wanted and could never accomplish because of certain unfounded prejudices that had remained for over a century, but it seemed tragedy had brought them together.
I walked over to Catherine with a huge lump in my throat. I knew she and Allison must have had something to do with this, but now was not the time to discuss it. So many dead witches and hybrids, and several I recognized. My heart hurt.
Catherine was helping Katie, a hybrid, to her feet. âThank you for everything.â I attempted to hold back my tears and wrapped my arms around my middle. âI donât know that we would have made it out alive if not for your help.â
She smiled and hugged me, then pulled back, looking into my eyes. âYou and your family have done so much for me, for the city, and for the coven over the years. Iâve known you all of your life, Abby, even when you didnât know me.â She swiped an errant tear from my cheek. âWe fight together. Always.â
Catherine had been a longtime friend of my motherâs, but until the whole talisman thing had gone down, Iâd rarely had any interaction with her. Now, she felt like family.
âAlways,â I repeated with a small smile, and then turned to Katie. She was tall and thin, with long light-brown hair and whiskey-colored eyes.
